We are looking to relocate.. and I know nothing about Wyoming! We are going to take a trip to visit and see the area, but pros/cons to living there? What area are good/bad?

I just told my girls target was 2hrs away and they’re like WHAT. I’m willing to go visit and see.. but man if the weather is that brutal in the winter, I’m not sure. My DH would rather be in a more rural area but I’m the opposite 😂 I think I could make it work but we have really active kids too. In competitive soccer, and other sports. Ugh. I’m glad I asked on here though to get a real response. Thank you all!!!!

Ahhh. I see. Well I’m hoping going out there will help. I just also don’t wanna go in the most beautiful time, and then realize we moved to hell in winter. Is the winter worse there than Colorado?
I would never voluntarily move my girls to such a red state. Politics alone would cross Wyoming right off our lists. There are beautiful places that believe in a woman’s right to healthcare.

I think that you and your H need to spend some time defining what “rural” means to each of you, and how rural you and your children are going to thrive and be happy in. It’s going to be pretty hard to balance “Target is our lives” and competitive soccer and what not with Central mountain regions rural. Sheridan is gorgeous but a short visit isn’t going to give you the best perspective of what day to day living in the region is like.

Ohhhh sports is a WHOLE THING up there. Lots of kids do state sports so you have to travel everywhere for games. I don't know how much you travel now but it's 3-8 hours one way every weekend. It's not like you can play in the same town or neighboring towns. I'm not even sure if Sheridan has a competitive team. And I saw your question about the winter worse than Colorado. And I would say the winter is much worse than the Colorado Front Range. They get much more snow and the wind...

Funny thing, abortion is legal in Wyoming for now and probably for awhile..."Abortion is legal in Wyoming again, oddly enough as the result of a state constitutional amendment pushed by conservatives opposed to Obamacare more than a decade ago.Teton County District Court Judge Melissa Owens in a ruling Wednesday temporarily blocked enforcement of the state's newly enacted abortion ban that took effect Sunday.Owens' decision pointed to a 2012 amendment to the state constitution that granted Wyoming citizens the right to make their own health-care decisions. Wyoming voters overwhelmingly passed that amendment, which was intended to protect them from hypothetical harms contained in then-President Barack Obama's signature health law, the Affordable Care Act."https://www.cnbc.com/2023/03/24/wyoming-abortion-ban-blocked-due-to-obamacare-era-amendment.htmlOpens a new window

We travel 2 hours at least for away games and tournaments can be anywhere 1-8 hours away. But we have home games as well. And I’ll have 4 in school, high school, middle and elementary. And currently have a newborn. But I saw the schooling is great there. Man this whole weather thing has me thinking. 😳
I have lived in Wyoming for awhile. I grew up in Minnesota and I actually find the winters much better here. It is not so bitter cold and at least in the part of the state that I live in we get over 300 days of sunshine a year. But the distance between towns is not for everyone. Sheridan would have a variety of sports team and I know they have soccer but travel times will be long. My daughter just had an event over the weekend that was over 4 hours away. I coached for awhile and it was not unusual to get on a bus at 9am for a 5 pm game. High school students in sports miss a lot of school.Politically it is quite conservative but in my experience it is not so much the Bible thumping style of conservative. It is much more the "I don't want the government telling me what to do" style of conservative. As a Democrat I find that much more palatable. I actually found the political climate much worse when I lived in Southeast Iowa.

I think in general winters are worse in Wyoming because of the wind. But Colorado is a big state too, and there's a lot of different climates here. Winter in Denver isn't that bad. Winter in someplace like Alamosa is hella cold.
